Professor Joao Assis has been practicing Jiu Jitsu for over 14 years. He’s been a black belt since 2009 under the living legend and leader of Checkmat BJJ team: Leonardo Vieira. Professor Assis received his first degree on his black belt in 2013. Professor Assis is a dedicated and active Brazilian Jiu Jitsu competitor. He is also one of the leading professors of the sport. Among his students are serious BJJ competitors, MMA Fighters, law enforcement officers, military personnel, children, hobbyists, fitness and self-defense enthusiasts. His accomplishments in BJJ are matched by only a few in the history of the sport. He consistently makes it to the podium at the black belt level whenever he competes. He’s medaled at the Jiu Jitsu Worlds Championship, ADCC, Jiu Jitsu NoGi Worlds Championship, Pan-American Championship, American Nationals Championship and Grapplers Quest.
